This vintage items have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina and are ready to install. Four new screws supplied.

Presented here is a vintage pair of large door handles, handcrafted in Venice Italy around the 1990`s, probably originally designed for either a shop, restaurant, hotel or a private home.

They could be fitted on a door, furniture, or use as a decorative piece on a wall. It would make a smart finishing detail to a range of interiors such as Traditional, Country, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, 70`s Glamour, Shabby Chic, Industrial or Contemporary.

Structurally each quality handle is handmade in solid bronze, in a satin finish, quality cast with great attention to detail depicting the shape of the traditional iron prow head or `Fero da Prora` of a Venetian Italian Gondola. There are also present two removable brass cylinder couplers to create depth when the handle is fitted on the door. Four new screws are supplied & included in the price.

The brutalist design of these doors is not only decorative but also full of Venetian symbolisms. Each part of the prow iron`s shape refers to the geography of Venice: its  S form recalls the Grand Canal, while the 6 teeth facing forward represent the six districts of Venice (San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Castello, Dorsoduro & Cannaregio). The tooth facing backward stands for the Giudecca Isle. The small arch over the highest tooth is the Rialto Bridge. The arched part at the top has a peculiar name, the Doge’s hat.

These doors are in very good vintage condition. The vintage patina has been preserved on the metal. The frames are sound & sturdy with no missing or broken parts. The surface finish has a warm patina developed over the years with minor rubbing & tiny marks in line with age & wear.

Additional dimensions:

VENETIAN ITALIAN GONDOLA `FERO DA PRORA` HISTORY

The gondola has existed in Venice since the 11th Century, being first mentioned by name in 1094. The lack of roads and horses, together with the size of the canals required a thin and flat bottomed boat.
It is distinguished by two original ornaments, the big `fero da prora` on the front and the smaller `riço` at the back of the boat.

The typical comb or prow iron (in Venetian fero da prora or dolfin) at the tip of the gondola helps to balance the weight of the gondolier and keeps the gondola’s flat bottom level in the water. The creative Venetians artists decorated & covered this metal blade with symbolic meaning. Apart from the six `fingers` explained above, there are often present between them three small friezes featuring Venice`s three main bridges: Rialto, Accademia and Scalzi.
