Item Description
A late 19th-century French bronze coffret, c. 1880, cast with richly detailed Neo-Gothic relief decoration. The panels feature figures within Gothic architectural arcading — pointed arches, slender columns and canopied niches — evoking the stonework of cathedral portals. The scenes depict kneeling supplicants before a central saint or holy figure, reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts and rendered with a compelling level of detail.
Cast in bronze with a deep and even brown patina, the coffret rests on four short feet and retains its original hinged hasp lock. Likely intended as a jewellery or trinket box, or as a distinguished desktop piece for a study. A beautiful and finely cast piece of Gothic Revival, with original hardware and rich patina.
