Item Description
A pair of early 19th-century French faience tiles from the Manufacture de l'Autruche in Nevers. One tile features a stencilled deer surrounded by trees and a fence, the other a stencilled rosette, both contained within reserves surrounded by circular lines.
The edges are adorned with a frieze of blue dots and foliate ornament at the corners. The decoration employs a vibrant polychrome palette of blue, green, yellow and manganese. The combination of stencilled motifs with painterly brushwork lends a naive, characterful quality to the designs.
Marked on the reverse 'L.E Nevers'. A rare pair of early 19th-century Nevers tiles with appealing country imagery.
- Rosette tile dimensions: 11 x 11 cm
- Deer tile dimensions: 11.3 x 11.3 cm
- A loss to lower right corner of deer tile.
- Literature: Rosen, Jean. La Faïence de Nevers, Tome IV, pp. 108-109.
