Item Description

An original, early ink on paper drawing by British artist Trevor Bell (1930–2017), signed, titled Hell’s Mouth and dated 1956.

Bell moved to St Ives in 1955 at the encouragement of Terry Frost, joining a remarkable generation of artists working in and around the town. The following year he became a member of the Penwith Society. His early years in Cornwall were particularly formative, with the landscape and meeting of land and sea increasingly informing his move towards abstraction.

Created during this important early St Ives period, Hell’s Mouth uses a spare, fluid arrangement of ink lines to interpret the Cornish landscape. The title refers to Hell’s Mouth on Cornwall’s north coast, a dramatic inlet set beneath high, sheer cliffs between St Ives and Portreath.

Presented glazed, in a hand-stained and waxed, bevel-edged wooden frame.

H 44.5cm, W 51.5cm
