Item Description
A striking, hand carved pair of Chinese Foo Dogs or Chinese Guardian Lions of large scale. Highly symbolic in Chinese culture, these represent protection, strength, courage and good luck. The fine carving has a three dimensional quality. Layers of later paint have been carefully removed by hand to reveal the original gilding. The melding of lion-like qualities such as the mane, with Foo Dog features indicates that these were most likely made for the European market.
