Item Description
An evocative marble fragment of classical form, most likely a representation of Asclepius, the ancient Greek god of medicine, identifiable by the characteristic drapery wrapped around the waist and the suggestion of a once fully modelled, mature male physique. The sculpture presents the muscular torso of a standing male figure, partially draped in a himation that falls in deeply carved, rhythmic folds across the hips and lower body. The fabric, gathered at the side in a naturalistic knot contrasts elegantly with the smooth, idealised anatomy of the abdomen and back, reflecting a strong adherence to classical Greek sculptural principles. Although now a fragment, the remaining form retains a powerful presence, emphasising proportion, balance, and sculptural clarity. Surface wear, abrasions, and a soft aged patina enhance the fragments appeal, speaking to its age and history, aligning with the Grand Tour aesthetic whereby such pieces evoke the grandeur of antiquity. Presented on a modern museum display stand (Removeable) Marble Fragment Height 70cm Italy, Circa 1780.
