Item Description
A Rare Triangular Thonet Bentwood Card Table, Circa 1900
A beautiful bentwood design featuring a triangular playing surface covered in green woollen baize. The table stands on elegantly formed sabre legs joined by a central stretcher with a decorative finial. This rare Thonet design is a charming, fun, and functional piece that could also serve as a side, occasional, or console table. Original Thonet label still intact.
In 1830, Michael Thonet began experimenting with what would soon become known as “bentwood” furniture, and it was not long before Thonet and his sons were producing these pieces on an industrial scale. The name Thonet quickly became synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship, and the company’s bentwood furniture soon joined the ranks of the most celebrated—and most imitated—designs of modern times.
During the late 19th century, many bentwood furniture designs were created by Thonet with the help of unknown artists and artisans. By the turn of the century, however, a new design movement had emerged, and furniture manufacturers began recruiting renowned artists and architects to create innovative new products. Throughout the early 20th century, the scale, expertise, and reach of the Thonet Company’s manufacturing capabilities attracted many of the world’s leading designers, including Otto Wagner, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe.
