Although little is known about Tixier’s life, records indicate he was born in France in 1862. The article praised his paintings for their “pleasing effects of artificial and outdoor lighting,” a quality evident in the subtle interplay of sunlight in this piece.

Galerie Durand-Ruel, one of the most prestigious galleries of its time, played a pivotal role in the promotion of the Impressionists. Run by the influential art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel (1831–1922), the gallery was instrumental in bringing the works of Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and others to prominence, particularly among American collectors.
