Item Description
This is a stunning antique French painting that was discovered recently in Avignon in the South of France. Dating from the 19th century this fabulous and highly romantic oil on canvas depicts the story of Cupid and Psyche or Eros and Psyche in Greek mythology. Filled with gorgeous details this opulent work of art is marvellous in its fine artistic expression and quality. The canvas measures about 50 x 65 cm or 19.6 x 25.5 inches. It was recently framed [as it was discovered without it]. The frame measures 61 x 78 x 4.5 cm or about 24 x 30.7 x 1.7 inches. In lovely antique condition and exactly as I discovered it with minor signs of ageing. For the full condition please refer to the images!
Cupid and Psyche is a legend or myth originally from 'Metamorphoses', written in the 2nd century AD. The tale concerns the overcoming of obstacles to the love between Psyche [Soul or Breath of Life] and Cupid [Desire], and their ultimate union in sacred marriage. The first printed version dates from 1469 [previously it existed only in the form of manuscripts]. Ever since, the reception of Cupid and Psyche in the classical tradition has been extensive. The story has been retold in poetry, drama, and opera, and depicted widely in painting and sculpture.
