Item Description
A small parianware figurative sculpture of the Borghese Gladiator by porcelain makers Hertwig & Co.
Raised on an integral rectangular base, this decorative sculpture is a stunning feature for a period property looking to appreciate German craftsmanship as it bares the mark used by the renowned Hertwig & Co between 1914 -1945.
Displayed in a strong stance, this expertly handcarved statue offers a sense of movement and charm, mounted on characterful marble bases with the veneered walnut displaying a rich finish.
Borghese Gladiator
This parianware depiction is after the antique Borghese gladiator by Vincenzo Gemito.
The original marble sculpture was found in the early 1600s, in Nettuna, Rome, among the ruins of a seaside palace belonging to Emperor Nero on the site of the ancient Antium and believed to represent Achilles fighting with the mounted Amazon.
The sculpture was later added to the Borghese collection, at the Villa Borghese, Italy, where it stood in a dedicated room.
In 1807, the sculpture was taken to Paris when the Borghese collection was acquired for the Louvre, where it now resides.
