Item Description
Four 6-inch English arts and crafts era glazed floral tiles, circa 1900, attributed to Lewis Foreman Day for Pilkington’s Tile and Pottery Co.
It is well-known that while not all Pilkington's tile were signed, initial designs were marked with a single letter 'P' to the reverse. From around 1900 onwards, this was later adapted to be a pair of letter 'P's, impressed on opposite sides of the tile with a 5 bar back.
19th century architect and decorative designer, Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910), was artistic consultant for Pilkington’s as one of the leading designers of the arts and crafts movement.
Several of his pottery works can be found in The British Museum and the V&A, including this tile of a similar design made for Pilkington’s at Clifton Junction dating to around 1900.
Each decorated with a stylised red glazed flower among green leaves and vines on a rich dark blue backdrop, these four tiles together create a 62 cm square (24.5 inch) decorative panel, making a beautiful floral artwork piece for the walls of an interior. Alternatively, these antique English tiles are superb collector’s pieces for a ceramics cabinet, demonstrating the skill and artistry of early British pottery production.
