Item Description
A strong and striking set of wrought iron driveway gates with original finials and working gate stay. They are stamped ‘Williams, Humphreys & Co, Carnarvon’, ironmongers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These gates were made at the hand of a talented blacksmith, onsite at the company workshop in the Brunswick Buildings of the Welsh portside town of Caernarfon. Over 120 years old, these Victorian driveway gates are exceptionally well preserved, detailed with the original classically styled spiked finials with a fleur-de-lis type base and have an even surface rust throughout. Steeped in British history, these gates make an impressive entrance to an estate or period townhouse.
Victorian Wrought Iron Driveway Gates
Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
