Petite Guerre Privée, 1976 | Roger Dewint (Belgian, 1942–2021)

An original colour etching by Belgian artist Roger Dewint, produced in 1976 and numbered 5 from an edition of 10.

Petite Guerre Privée (Private Little War) is a striking composition of fragmented figures, expressive lines and abstract forms, rendered in vibrant burnt copper tones, deep burgundy and warm rust red. The rich, almost metallic colours give the print a remarkable warmth, contrasting with its darker, surreal subject matter.

A handwritten French quotation from Jean-Paul Sartre's autobiographical work Les Mots (1964) runs beneath the composition, introducing a literary dimension to the work and its reflections on life and mortality.

Roger Dewint (1942–2021) was a Belgian painter and printmaker who studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Known for his experimental approach to traditional printmaking techniques, he developed a distinctive body of work combining expressive figuration with abstraction. His prints are represented in the collection of the Centre de la Gravure et de l'Image imprimée in Belgium.
