Item Description
Early 19th century American School portrait of a young boy in a pink dress, holding a whip with a whistle at the grip end. Within the original gilt hollow frame, circa 1840.
o.s:19.5 in x 21.5 in
In the 19th century it was considered more appropriate to dress boys in pink and girls in blue so we need to look for further clues in order to identify the subjects gender; in this case the whip. Furthermore, boys hair was usually parted to one side whereas girls' hair was parted in the centre.
