Item Description
A View of Blackwall Looking Towards Greenwich and View of Limehouse Looking Down The Thames. Published by Boydell in 1750 & 1751.
Blackwall to Greenwich shows the twin domes of the Hospital far into the distance whilst in the foreground barges and a small sailing hoy are preparing to take goods to the Wharves of the East India Company. The group of merchant vessels behind are likely in the service of the Company. In the foreground again is a small boat with whitebait fishermen. The ship building yard is that of Philip Parry and the vessel under construction (extreme right) is probably the East Indiaman, Falmouth, launched the year this engraving was published.
The pendant to the Greenwich engraving shows the back of the houses of Narrow Street and Fore Street, Limehouse. Spring Stairs run up before the first building in the terrace and around halfway along the print we are shown Dukes Court and before it Dukes Shore and Dukes Dock. The Limehouse China Factory was situated around Dukes Shore. The ship in the far distance marks Limekiln Dock, a convenient landing for place for goods bound for London by road, saving the difficult to navigate journey up the Thames to the Tower.
Perspective engravings with original colour, within goods replicas of eighteenth century print frames.
