Item Description

An amusing painting, executed in oil on artists' board by C.W Nicholls RHA, offering something of a play on the fairy tale of Cinderella at the ball. The dashing prince, an officer of the First Life Guards, engages in conversation with his 'Cinderella' whilst the two ugly spinster stepsisters glower on disapprovingly.

Within a fine Victorian gilt gesso frame period to the painting.

The pendant to this work was offered at Sotheby's Belgravia, 3rd May 1977 titled 'The Introduction', and again at Sotheby's, London, 16th May 1996, this time titled 'A Reception at Dublin Castle'.

Charles Wynne Nicholls was born in Dublin, October 1831. Initially studying at the Royal Dublin Society's Schools, he went on to the Royal Hibernian Academy, exhibiting as a member from 1859. He was a regular exhibitor at London's Royal Academy and moved to London in 1864 from where he continued to exhibit in Dublin.
