Item Description

A fantastic Victorian lamp base made from heavy cut glass, attributable to the Birmingham firm of F & C Osler.

Originally supporting a matching glass reservoir for lamp oil, now converted and wired for electricity.

The capital is silver plated cast brass. English circa 1860.

F & C Osler began making glass in Birmingham in 1807. When the second generation took to running the business in 1831, the two sons, Follett and Clarkson, relocated the works and began competing with the French glass industry supplying luxury goods to the home market, aristocratic Europeans and Indian Royalty. They were favoured with commissions from Queen Victoria, Ibrahim Pasha, and a number of distinguished Maharajahs, supplying these from their own outlets in India. For the Great Exhibition of 1851, F & C Osler produced a monumental four tonne cut-glass crystal fountain displayed at the centre of the exhibition in Hyde Park.
