Item Description

Earl of Seafield is a title in the Peerage of Scotland, created for this man, James Ogilvy, in 1701. He succeeded his father as 4th Earl of Findlater in 1711. He was Lord Chancellor of Scotland. The earldoms of Findlater and Seafield continued to be united until 1811 when the earldom of Findlater became dormant. The earldom of Seafield remains extant.

This fine and handsome portrait, engraved in mezzotint with a line engraved surround and title by John Smith, was published circa 1704 and produced after the original work by Sir Godfrey Kneller.

The image in excellent condition; the margins with some skilful restorations.

Within a fine replica of a correct eighteenth century print frame, ebonized with a gilt sight.
