Item Description

A Petit Point embroidered picture of two Georgian tourists together with their guide in a rocky landscape with a waterfall.

Mostly executed using tent stitch with a chenille thread employed for the leaves of the trees and the other green foliage.

Made circa 1820, within a period giltwood frame with an egg and dart sight edge and glazed with verre églomisé.

Made in England circa 1800.

o.s: 28 in x 22.75 in

It is possible that the design for this fine embroidery is taken from a watercolour by Francis Towne (British 1740-1816). A British water-colourist of landscapes that ranged from the Lake District to Devon, Rome to Naples, making it difficult to be sure of the location. Two Georgian tourists wearing tail coats in the company of a guide suggest a European setting, perhaps Italy.
