Item Description
A fine print of this rare engraving, 'Joannes Baro de Churchill'...........1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722); soldier and statesman.
Churchill was, in effect, a secret agent of James, Duke of York. He played an important role in crushing the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion when James was made King in 1685. Three years later he abandoned his Catholic King for the Protestant William of Orange. Churchill was at his height under Queen Anne, being promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the allied forces, winning great victories against the French in the War of Spanish Succession. Being dismissed by the Queen in 1711, he regained favour under King George I in 1714.
Engraving, by Pieter van Gunst after the portrait by Adriaen van der Werff; published by Renier Leers, circa 1685.
Within a good replica of an eighteenth century print frame.
