Item Description

Perspective View of the Old Walton Bridge with original gouache colouring.

London published circa 1760, within a good handmade copy of an eighteenth century print frame. o.s:19 in x 12.5 in

Built to cross the River Thames between Walton and Shepperton to a design by William Etheridge, the concept allowed for the removal of a single failing timber without disturbing the rest of the bridge. It was completed in 1750 and acquired considerable fame, being mentioned in the Gentleman’s Magazine, within a report by Daniel Defoe and painted by Canaletto; the work now held by The Dulwich Picture Gallery.
By 1778 the structure was judged to be unsound and it was dismantled in 1783.
