Item Description
A portrait miniature of an Irishman painted by the sitter's countryman artist, Frederick Buck; likely the subject is also from the artist's hometown of Cork.
In the absence of the sitter's identity being known, this work of art is as much about the framing as it is about the painting. This being the case, the painting is about as good as Buck gets and serves to show what the man was capable of achieving and the output that established his reputation in the day.
The frame, of an unmarked gold metal, has a plain back save for two bright-cut engraved bands. The framing of the portrait is acheieved with two cut-out and bright-cut engraved bands, between which are locks of the sitter's hair plaited. These bands are fixed top and bottom with a leaf and a buckle; to the left and right is a bright-cut engraved four-leafed shamrock.
The whole Irish and dating to circa 1800.
Painted on ivory and registered under the Ivory Act
