Item Description

A rococo gilt copper snuffbox celebrating the end of the Seven Years' War and thereby dating to around 1763; probably made in the Birmingham workshop of either John Bentley or John Gimlet.

The lid stamped with a design of Trophy of Arms conflated with Attributes of Music, the sides made of panels showing a ship being laden with huge bundles of merchandise. The front is made symbolic of Plenty, whilst the back panel shows a character bearing arms and another holding aloft a relief panel of a Victorious Caesar in profile; between the two a figure of Victory.

All produced with considerable depth, burnished and chased to great effect.
