Item Description

A tiny snuff box made by 'Smith, Mauchlin, Manufacturers to His Majesty'. Printed with the Stuart Clan tartan, the lid painted with a view of the Scott Monument.

1 3/8 in x 1 1/8 in

According to The Smith Art Gallery & Museum, tourism in the Sterling area of Scotland is considered to have started with the publication of Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake in 1810.

The Scottish snuff box industry began in Ayreshire at the end of the eighteenth century being firmly established in the town of Mauchlin by 1820.

This little box, celebrating Sir Walter Scott, was likely produced around 1846, his monument in Edinburgh being inaugurated on the 15th August that year.
