Item Description
A fine pair of Spanish ‘capstan’ candlesticks, circa 1600.
Taking from Ronald F. Michaelis’ work on ‘Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks’, fig 66/67, we learn that these candlesticks are either Spanish or Italian.
There are several differences that set these apart from the more familiar English or Low Countries version of a capstan candlestick. There is the short vertical step around the edge of the foot as opposed to the gradual sweep that extends to the edge of the foot rim, and the double ogee moulding at the top and bottom of the socket and the apertures therein that are made as rectangular openings with a hole above. In some instances this hole cuts into the rectangular opening to form a Spanish or Moorish Gothic arch. A further distinction is the cast reeded edge to the drip pan. Michaelis and another author on such things, Alexander Curle, agree that candlesticks with square or rectangular lateral openings will almost certainly date to before 1600. In John Caspall’s work a date of between 1550 and 1580 is suggested.
In accordance with the writings of all three authors, the bases and drip pans of these sticks are cast as one; the sockets being made with a short spigot which is peened over beneath the lathe finished base.
