Item Description
A fine tortoiseshell pocket box delicately decorated with a gold and silver wire sprig of carnations and an alighting butterfly.
From the seventeenth century the carnation was a widely understood symbol of blossoming love, especially in Dutch art; Holland being a possible place of origin for this fine box. Over the centuries the flower has also variously symbolized womanhood, purity, motherhood and resistance.
