Item Description
A fine pair of paintings by Frederick Calvert;Boats at the Mouth of the River Medina with Cowes Castle and Cowes town in the distance, and the pendant, showing Cowes again but from further out to sea and around the coast.
The present view of Cowes from the mouth of the River Medina is a larger version of the work held at Victoria Art Gallery in Bath.
Both signed F. Calvert and done circa 1840.
Within their original gilt gesso frames.
By way of a provenance each frame bears a label to the reverse written 'Bought in the Thenford Sale, Nov. 1937 for Michael. Lot 302 £5.0.0

Although working mainly in London from around 1810, Frederick Calvert was in fact an Irish artist successful as a painter of marine and coastal scenes; this pair of paintings being typical of his principal output. The Isle of Wight, Illustrated in a Series of Coloured Views was published in 1846 containing 20 hand-coloured aquatint plates by Percy Roberts after Calvert.
