Item Description

Adoration of the Shepherds
Emilian School, 16th Century

“And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger…”
Luke 2:15–16

A beautifully composed Renaissance depiction of the first revelation of Christ’s birth to the wider world, painted in Emilia in the 16th century. The scene unfolds with both clarity and warmth, capturing the immediacy of the shepherds’ response to the angelic announcement.

The composition is arranged in two linked moments. In the upper right, an angel appears to the shepherds in the fields by night, announcing the birth of a Saviour. Below, that message has already been acted upon as the shepherds arrive in haste at the manger, filling the foreground with movement, devotion, and awe.

At the centre, they kneel before the Christ Child. Mary turns in prayerful stillness towards her son, while Joseph rests nearby, observing the scene with quiet weariness. One shepherd lifts his arms in wonder; others bow in reverence, their gestures creating a natural rhythm of devotion and response.

Together with the Adoration of the Magi, this subject completes the dual revelation of Christ’s birth, first to the shepherds, the first Jews, and then to the Magi, the first Gentiles, signifying the universal nature of the message.

Painted on a single substantial panel of wood, the work retains a strong sense of unity and presence, characteristic of large-scale devotional painting intended for contemplation.
