Item Description

Flagellation of Christ
Workshop of Frans Francken the Younger (1582–1642)
“Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him…”
John 19:1–2
A vivid and finely detailed depiction of the Flagellation of Christ, painted on copper and attributed to the workshop of Frans Francken the Younger, one of Antwerp’s leading painters in the early 17th century.
The work is striking in its density of narrative and emotion. Christ is shown at the centre of the composition, already marked by suffering, his body bound and crowned with thorns. Around him, Roman soldiers enact the scourging with immediate physical force, one steadying Christ as another raises the whip, their movements tightly choreographed within the confined space.
The instrument of punishment, the Roman flagrum, is clearly depicted, reinforcing the historical realism of the scene. In the background, additional soldiers gather with torches and weapons, their presence extending the sense of pressure and containment.
Light plays a powerful symbolic role. The flames of the torches rise into the night, while Christ himself becomes the true source of illumination, his halo undimmed, even in suffering. Colour, movement, and light converge to heighten the emotional intensity of the moment.
At the upper edge of the composition, a small group of contemporary-dressed figures appears in quiet conversation, seemingly detached from the scene below. This deliberate anachronism draws the viewer into the painting’s moral frame: the Passion is not distant history, but something that can be witnessed, and overlooked, at any time.
Ultimately, the work extends beyond its narrative subject to pose a broader reflection on awareness, compassion, and moral attention.
