Item Description
The Deposition from the Cross
Catalan School, c. 1520–1530
A deeply moving early 16th-century depiction of Christ immediately after his removal from the Cross, painted by an unknown artist working in Catalonia during the Renaissance.
Balancing the traditions of both the Deposition and the Lamentation, the composition is filled with a quiet sense of movement and tenderness. Christ’s body is not yet fully at rest; instead, it is carefully lowered and supported by the women gathered around him, creating a scene that feels immediate, intimate, and profoundly human.
At the centre, the Virgin Mary cradles her son with restrained sorrow, her gesture both maternal and devotional. She is assisted by Mary Magdalene and another holy woman, likely Mary the mother of James and Joses. One gently supports Christ’s body, while another tends to his wounded hand with oil, preparing him for burial.
The emotional power of the painting lies in its simplicity. The figures are closely bound together, their grief conveyed not through theatrical expression but through touch, gesture, and proximity. Mary’s hand rests near the wound in Christ’s side, drawing attention to the physical reality of his suffering only moments after the Crucifixion.
The work remains within its original integral frame, carved with braided decoration and Gothic arches, reinforcing its devotional character. Likely intended for private contemplation within a wealthy Catalan household, the painting still retains the quiet intensity and emotional immediacy for which Renaissance devotional art is so enduringly admired.
