Item Description

Pharaoh’s Army Engulfed by the Red Sea
Flemish School, 17th Century

A powerful and highly atmospheric depiction of one of the most dramatic moments in the Book of Exodus: the closing of the Red Sea upon Pharaoh’s army as the Israelites reach safety on the far shore.
Rather than showing the parting of the waters, the artist chooses the moment of reversal, when deliverance has already occurred, and judgement unfolds behind it. The result is a composition held between calm and catastrophe.

On the right, the Israelites gather in quiet relief. Figures converse, mothers cradle children, and provisions are carried ashore, including symbolic references to the “unleavened bread” described in Exodus. Rendered in contemporary 17th-century dress, the scene would have felt immediate and recognisable to its original audience, grounding the biblical narrative in their own world.

To the left, the sea becomes chaos. Pharaoh’s forces are overwhelmed, their chariots swallowed and scattered, bodies disappearing into the water. In the foreground, a figure, possibly Pharaoh himself, sits atop a collapsing chariot, striking out in futile resistance.

Between these two worlds stands Moses. Calm and still, he looks toward the destruction he has witnessed, his role as intermediary between divine command and human consequence made clear.
Dramatic yet controlled, the painting captures a profound shift: from bondage to freedom, from pursuit to deliverance, from power to collapse, brought about through a single act of faith and obedience.
