Item Description
Christ as Salvator Mundi
Follower of Joos van Cleve (1511–1540/1)
A finely painted and quietly powerful example of Christ as Salvator Mundi, “Saviour of the World”, a subject that became one of the most enduring devotional images of the Northern Renaissance.
Joos van Cleve was among the leading painters in early 16th-century Flanders, and his workshop produced numerous variations on this composition, including examples now held in major collections such as the Louvre. Our painting is attributed to a close follower working within that same tradition.
Christ is shown frontally, calm and self-possessed, offering a gesture of blessing with his right hand while his left rests upon a crystal globe. The gesture, with thumb and two fingers raised, carries a long symbolic lineage of blessing and protection.
The globe itself is rendered with exceptional delicacy. Christ’s hand is seen through its surface with precise spatial clarity, while a jewelled band divides the world into three sections, Europe, Africa, and Asia, reflecting the known world of the period. At its summit, a jewelled cross recalls the Crucifixion, uniting sovereignty with sacrifice.
Christ’s red robe enhances the sense of majesty and presence; its folds carefully shaped around a central clasp-like jewel that both decorates and structurally defines the composition. This interplay of ornament and form draws the eye through the painting, reinforcing its visual harmony.
Above all, it is Christ’s expression that lingers, serene, direct, and contemplative. He meets the viewer’s gaze with quiet assurance: a figure who has suffered yet remains at peace. In turn, the painting offers the same sense of stillness to those who stand before it.
