Item Description
A Regency rosewood bergère chair having an upholstered back and seat with original horsehair and squab cushion. The front rail and gently scrolled arms with inset panel detail terminating in carved roundells. Raised on a reeded front leg with splayed back leg and retaining the original high quality brass cup castors. Original finish and and lovely colour. Stamped "RC" to the underside of the back rail. Attributed to Gillows, Circa 1820.
* The initials 'RC' are listed in Gillows Apprenices, Workmen and tradesman listings and states "The Initials 'RC' were stamped under a pair of hall chairs (c.1810-20) with scrolled shell backs."
**This chair is based on the 'Curricle' chair as fist illustrated by Thomas Sheraton in The Cabinet Dictionary, London 1803. The style was then adapted by Gillows of London, who supplied similar caned chairs to Tatton Park, Cheshire, and later reinvented the design in various woods with alternative ornamentation. ( Susan E. Stuart Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, 2008).
