Item Description

Victorian Sporting Oil Painting Horse & Terrier Stable Interior
Circle of Edwin Frederick Holt c.1885
A beautifully atmospheric late Victorian sporting oil painting depicting a strawberry grey roan hunter standing within a traditional stable interior beside an attentive terrier. Painted circa 1885 and attributed to the Circle of Edwin Frederick Holt, this charming British equestrian artwork perfectly captures the quiet elegance and rural character of 19th century sporting life.

Executed in oil on canvas, the composition displays warm stable tones, naturalistic horse portraiture, and confident painterly handling associated with traditional Victorian sporting art. The rare strawberry grey roan colouring gives the horse exceptional decorative appeal, while the terrier introduces warmth, personality, and narrative charm.

The softly illuminated stable setting, painted in earthy ochres and umbers, creates a refined country house aesthetic ideal for traditional, equestrian, farmhouse, or classic English interiors. The work combines strong decorative presence with authentic sporting character, making it highly suitable for collectors of British animal paintings and antique sporting art.

Attributed to the Circle of Edwin Frederick Holt (British, fl.1864–1897), a noted Victorian sporting and equine painter recognised for scenes of hunters, stable interiors, and rural country life.

Presented in an ornate Victorian gilt frame with acanthus scroll decoration and classical moulding. The frame displays age-related wear consistent with period use and complements the painting beautifully.
