Item Description

Antique Roman Micromosaic Brooch of the Colosseum in High Carat Gold
Grand Tour Jewellery, Rome Circa 1870 – In the Manner of Cesare Roccheggiani
A superb antique 19th century Roman micromosaic brooch depicting the iconic Colosseum, crafted during the height of the Grand Tour era, circa 1870. Executed in exceptionally fine hand-cut coloured glass tesserae and mounted in unmarked high-carat yellow gold, likely 15ct, this refined example survives in very good antique condition and is accompanied by a fitted presentation case.
An elegant and highly collectible piece of Grand Tour jewellery, showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship associated with the finest Roman micromosaic workshops of the nineteenth century.
Fine Roman Micromosaic Craftsmanship
The detailed architectural scene is composed of minute hand-laid tesserae, demonstrating remarkable precision and artistic control. The Colosseum is rendered with impressive depth and perspective, enhanced by subtle tonal variations throughout the ancient stonework and a softly graduated sky.
The dramatic black surround beautifully frames the mosaic panel, intensifying both the luminosity of the glasswork and the warmth of the rich yellow gold mount.
The exceptional quality of execution places this brooch well above standard Grand Tour souvenir jewellery of the period.
Grand Tour Jewellery & Roman Decorative Arts
Micromosaics became highly fashionable among affluent European travellers visiting Italy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Rome became the leading centre for this sophisticated art form, producing luxury jewellery and decorative objects depicting famous ancient landmarks and classical scenes.
Large-scale architectural micromosaics such as this example were costly commissions intended for wealthy collectors and aristocratic visitors undertaking the Grand Tour.
Attributed in the Manner of Cesare Roccheggiani
This brooch is attributed in the manner of Cesare Roccheggiani, one of the most respected Roman micromosaic artists active during the second half of the nineteenth century.
The piece displays many characteristics associated with the finest Roccheggiani workshop productions, including:
• Exceptionally fine tesserae work
• Detailed architectural composition
• Balanced perspective and colouring
• Refined presentation within an elegant mount
Although unsigned, the workmanship strongly reflects the output of leading Roman micromosaic ateliers of the period.
