Item Description
Antique French gilt oval mirror, circa 1840. The layered frame has an outer band of raised lozenges encircled with narrow leaves followed by a matt gold incurving section. Next is a delicate raised ribbon-twist section before another, narrow, matt gilt band runs around the frame next to the glass. The mirror is decorated at the top with a wide, decorative, floral and foliate cartouche and at the base with a simplified curled acanthus leaf design. Where this mirror has been hung in a French house and dusted for almost 200 years, the gilding has darkened and thinned in places giving the mirror frame a warm, chestnut brown and dark terracotta colour. The original, bevelled, mercury glass is in lovely condition, with just a little age and sparkles, giving an excellent reflection.
