Item Description
A documented sosaku (creative) kokeshi by Uchida Waichi, depicting an Oharame — one of the firewood-selling women of Ohara, near Kyoto, who traditionally carried bundles of kindling on their heads to sell in the city. Waichi captures her mid-stride: eyes closed, a soft smile beneath a white cotton head cloth, a miniature bundle of twigs balanced on her head. She wears an indigo kimono brushed with white snowflake motifs over a red apron, and stands on a rustic charred-wood plinth beside a calligraphed title plaque bearing the artist's seal.
The original box carries Waichi's handwritten label — "Modern Masterpiece Kokeshi: Oharame" — citing awards at the All-Japan Kokeshi Concours, including a Governor's Prize, and signed with his red seal. Figure, plaque, and box together form a complete, documented set.
Height approx. 14 cm including headdress.
A quietly expressive piece of mid-Showa folk artistry — suited to a kokeshi collection, or styled on a shelf, console, or bookcase as a single note of Japanese craft.
Condition: good vintage condition. The cotton head cloth and box show age toning and staining consistent with date; the painted figure and plinth are sound.
