Item Description

A finely worked early 20th Century Burmese kalaga ceremonial hanging of substantial decorative scale.

Richly embroidered with metallic sequins, appliqué silkwork and raised hand stitching on a deep claret velvet ground. The central panel depicts a mythological royal procession travelling in an ornate horse-drawn chariot accompanied by celestial attendants, all framed within repeating borders of chinthe guardian lions and heavenly beings.

Executed in the traditional Mandalay workshop manner using layered appliqué, couched embroidery and thousands of hand-applied sequins, the textile possesses remarkable texture, shimmer and sculptural depth throughout. The mellowed palette and naturally aged surface give the piece strong atmosphere and visual presence. The reverse retains an old hand-sewn black cotton backing consistent with early construction techniques. Kalaga textiles of this type were produced for ceremonial and prestigious interior display, and today are highly sought after for their dramatic decorative impact and craftsmanship.

Myanmar (Burma), Circa 1900–1930. Presented mounted for hanging. Minor losses to some glass cabochons and sequined elements consistent with age and use.
