Item Description

Antique French Animalier Bronze Frog Sculpture c.1850
Parisian Workshop • Modelled in the Manner of Moigniez • Natural 19th-Century Patina
Description
An authentic mid-19th-century French bronze frog, cast in a Parisian workshop around 1850. This charming small sculpture is crafted in the naturalistic animalier style popularised in France by masters such as Fratin, Barye, and Jules Moigniez. Modelled in the manner of Moigniez, it features the softly rounded contours, careful modelling, and lifelike realism characteristic of the Parisian school during this period.
As is typical for workshop bronzes of this type, the piece is unsigned, yet the refined craftsmanship is unmistakably French. Cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) technique, the frog now displays a rich, naturally aged patina combining deep brown and olive tones, with warm highlights from more than a century of gentle handling. The underside retains its original casting vent hole, entirely correct for Parisian production of the era.
Bronzes in this naturalistic style were widely collected in the mid-19th century, most notably by William T. Walters, whose extensive collection helped establish international appreciation for French animalier sculpture.
A wonderfully tactile and weighty piece, ideal for collectors of antique bronzes, animalier works, or distinctive 19th-century French decorative objects.
