Item Description

A compelling, near life-size garden figure of Bacchus, after the celebrated model by Jacopo Sansovino, whose original 16th century sculpture is now held in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. Conceived for a Florentine garden, the composition remains one of the most spirited depictions of the god of wine.

This early 20th century interpretation captures that same sense of movement and ease. Bacchus stands in an elegant contrapposto, crowned with ivy and raising a shallow phiale, his gesture both offering and celebratory. Behind him, a crouching Pan — cloven hoofed and draped in a goat’s pelt — gathers a cluster of grapes, enriching the scene with a playful note of abundance.

Beautifully weathered, the surface has developed a soft, mottled patina with areas of natural lichen, allowing the figure to sit effortlessly within its surroundings. There is a vitality to the casts modelling, giving the sculpture real presence whether placed in a garden setting or brought indoors as a focal piece. With an integral circular base or pedestal.

A particularly engaging and less commonly encountered model, with strong decorative impact.

Stone composite. Pedestal diameter 61cm.
(Not including York stone slab at base)
