Item Description
The wonderfully primitive mid-nineteenth century carved softwood milliner’s head, the elongated bust fashioned from a substantial single piece of timber, with a softly rounded cranium, deeply recessed eyes, pronounced nose and delicately delineated mouth, the whole retaining extensive remnants of an early black-stained surface, now beautifully worn to reveal the rich, warm tones of the timber beneath, the elongated neck terminating in a broad, flat base, with a circular aperture to the underside, for the mounting and display of wigs and hats in a milliner’s shop display.
In thoroughly evocative, timeworn condition, with historic surface losses, particularly to the extremities; the forehead, crown, nose and reverse, where the natural grain of the timber has become exposed. There are small shrinkage cracks, old abrasions and areas of degradation throughout, all contributing to its remarkable character. The surviving dark surface has acquired a wonderfully varied patina.
Such carved wooden heads were employed by milliners, hatters and wigmakers during the 19th century, both as practical forms and for the display of finished headwear. Often individually carved, their appearance varies considerably, from carefully modelled likenesses to more rudimentary, almost folk-art interpretations. This example, with its rather haunting expression and particularly sculptural proportions, possesses a character far removed from the conventional commercial mannequin.
An exceptionally decorative and early survivor of its type, its extraordinary surface, naive expression and strong sculptural presence lending it an almost enigmatic quality making it equally compelling as an object of vernacular craftsmanship or as a standalone piece of primitive sculpture.
