Item Description
An early George II figured walnut lowboy of rare, grand proportions, the quarter-veneered book-matched top with a moulded edge and fine feather-banding over three flush-fitting drawers with petal-back brasses. The piece is raised on four cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and pendant husks terminating in vigorous ball-and-claw feet, the whole possessing a deep, mellowed honey-coloured patination.
Its substantial scale for the type suggests the piece may have been commissioned for a grander setting than a standard dressing table, making it a sophisticated choice as a statement hall table or a focal side table in a principal reception room. The assertive carving of the ball-and-claw feet and the geometric precision of the quartered walnut define the peak of early 18th-century English cabinetmaking.
Very good antique condition with surface wear, historic indentations and characterful timber movement including some light, localised veneer bubbling, all consistent with an honest walnut piece of this age. Structurally sound with a well-preserved surface, clean and ready for immediate placement.
English, circa 1730.
