Item Description
A striking Victorian ebonised open bookcase in the eclectic Neo-Classical taste, the moulded top set over a gilt-decorated frieze with applied gilt-brass bead moulding, above two adjustable shelves flanked by gilt-metal mounts, all raised on a plinth base accented by a band of highly figured burr veneer.
The shallow proportions and slim profile allow the piece to sit flush against a perimeter wall without obstructing walkways.
Offered in an appealing, untouched country-house condition, the ebonised surfaces retain an honest, deeply textured historic patination with stable shrinkage splits to the side panels and an old veneer loss to the lower left flank of the plinth.
Due to natural timber movement over the past century, the shelves, while fully adjustable via traditional internal sawtooth tracks, require minor patience to seat fully in certain positions. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.
English, circa 1870.
