Item Description
A fine William IV period rosewood Davenport desk, crafted in exceptional rosewood and stamped by the maker W&C Wilkinson of Ludgate Hill, London.
The sloping writing surface with inset gilt-tooled leather unlocks and lifts open to a spacious interior with two small upper drawers above two faux drawers. To the right-hand side sits a sliding pen drawer with its original dividers, complete with period brass-mounted inkwell.
Below, a bank of mahogany drawers is concealed behind a locking panelled door to the side. The front supports are elegantly carved in scrolling rosewood with pierced fretwork panels, all hand-cut and typical of the very best London cabinetmaking of the 1830s. The piece is raised on beautifully shaped hollow bun feet with concealed brass castors.
Very good antique condition with some surface wear commensurate with age. The tooled leather writing surface exhibits a small, stable parting near one edge, resulting from historic timber movement to the top which is now entirely secure. Working keys for both the door and the desk are present. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.
English, circa 1835.
