Item Description

With regard to quality and artistry, Kirman carpets represent the pinnacle of all Persian workshop pieces. The workshops of Kirman, well known for the high standard of their craftmanship, won the royal patronage of the Safavid court in the 17th Century, and became some of the earliest Oriental carpets to make their way into the Western market, and are often spotted in historic houses across Europe and the UK. They remain highly sought after by collectors and designers alike today, thanks to the combination of their faithfulness to the techniques and patterns of the Classical Era, and the creativity of their designs.

This timeless early example features an unusual all-over pattern, with a gold, graphic ‘Hand of Fatima’ design, found on earlier examples of the 17th and 18th Centuries, as opposed to the more conventional central medallion, which lends the work a real sense of space and balance. The muted blue field provides a wonferful backdrop to the wide array of vegetable dyed colours used in the composition, including soft saffron tones, maroon, and light duck egg blues, all framed by a wide border. Judging from it size, and it’s highly unusual square format, this piece was likely a special comission, either for a member of the nobility or for the European market.

This early Kirman carpet is very good practical condition for everyday use, and its organic vegetable dyes have taken on a charming age related patina.

A wonderfully characterful example, with a striking colour palette and rare format, to add style and charisma to any space. We strongly recommend viewing this carpet in person, to fully appreciate the depth and complexity of its colours – we can arrange this at our North London studio-showroom, or in situ at your location, anywhere in the UK.
