Item Description
18th Century English Mahogany Secretaire Bureau Bookcase/Cabinet
A Very Interesting 18th Century English Bureau Bookcase/Cabinet Attributed to George Speer.
This bureau cabinet or bookcase is veneered throughout in highly figured mahogany. Beginning at the top, the piece has a dentilled cornice above a pair of glazed doors with an intricate astragal glazing bar pattern. The pattern consists of two concave-sided diamonds with leafy carved detailing to each point set against a series of geometric patterns. This intricate and very elegant design relates very closely to a series of drawings for glazing bars made by the London cabinet maker George Speer. One of the leading makers of the period, you can learn more about Speer and his output here:

The interior of this bureau has fine fretwork sections above the pigeon holes and delightful axe head handles used on the small drawers, as well as the lovely handles and escutcheons used on the external drawers, are all original and of the highest quality. The back of the piece is panelled, another sign of great quality, and it has a lovely colour and patination. An exceptional example.
