Item Description
18th Century German Inlaid Walnut Commode
An 18th Century German Inlaid Walnut Commode.
Probably South German in origin, this lovely serpentine commode is beautifully inlaid with a repeating geometric pattern across all three drawer fronts and down the conforming pilasters. The inlay is in darker timber, strung with boxwood, framing a series of burr walnut panels. Surrounding the panels are sections of bookmatched timber laid on an angle, creating a lighter contrast to the darker timbers used in the centres. The geometric strapwork-type inlay is also used on the top of the piece and on the sides. Standing on peg back feet and bun feet at the front. The top has an ebonised leading edge, providing additional visual contrast with the light timbers used around it.
