Item Description
Original Dr Robert Thornton engraving, circa 1802.
This engraving depicts "The Quadrangular Passion Flower" which is framed within a handmade structure and hessian mounts. The frame has truvue glass for optimal clarity.
Dr. Robert Thornton was an English physician and botanical writer who is best known for his works "The British Flora". Thornton attended Trinitity College, Cambridge, and was inspired by the botany studies so decided to switch from studying the church to medicine. After spending time abroad, Robert Thornton decided to practice in London, England.
The 'Quadrangular Passion Flower' was widely cultivated in South America and was seen as a delicacy within warmer countries. The colours are vivid and the illustration is detailed. It is inferred that this plant is a climbing plant which makes it a lot more striking than other works.
A highly decorative engraving that reflects a rich history of botanical study and will look wonderful in any interior.
