Item Description
A striking oil on board painting by Cornish artist Victor Bramley (1934–2014) of a fishing boat set up on a quayside for repair. He most likely found this scene in Newlyn, an important fishing harbour at the time. His rendering of the stonework in the painting is most impressive, and shows his attention to detail. As is his ability to show the effect of sunlight on the subject matter, creating strong shadows. The picture is in good condition, and is being sold with its original frame. Signed lower right corner.
Victor Bramley was born in Sheffield, moving to St Ives, Cornwall in 1959 at the age of 25. Having found himself a studio, he began to exhibit with the Penwith Society of Arts. In 1962 he was elected to the St Ives Society of Artists. His contemporaries at that time included Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach, and Peter Lanyon, amongst others.
