Item Description
Antique French arched mirror, circa 1840, with narrow, lipped water gilt frame. Where this mirror has been cleaned for more than 180 years, the gilding has thinned on the outcurving edge to reveal the burnished terracotta bole beneath as well as the narrow gold lines where each sheet of leaf overlapped when the mirror was first gilded. The original, mercury glass has some surface wear, age and ripples. Back in the early 19th century, when this glass was made, it would have been poured into a mould to make a thin sheet and this can result in little flaws such as air bubbles and some rippling or minor distortion, which just adds to the interest of these mirrors. This mirror still gives a very good reflection.
